Favourites of 2013: Makeup Edition

I hope everyone had a great holiday season and received awesome presents for Christmas 🙂 With a new year underway I wanted to go through my favourite products of the past year. I decided to break it down into a 3 part series, with 13 products for each edition: Makeup, Skincare/Haircare and Nail Polish.

Let me know what your favourites were for 2013 or leave me a link to your blog post! (I need some ideas for potential 2014 favourites!)

Keep reading to see what makeup made it into my favourites for 2013!

CoverGirl Clump Crusher Mascara – One of the most talked about mascaras this year and for good reason! I spoke about this product in my Project Trash Ten and am so excited to open up my next one (I think I have 3 of these in my “Backup” stash). Great pigmentation, absolutely NO clumping even after a billion coats, no flaking or smudging during the day. If you do have a problem with the curl of your lashes not holding, this doesn’t hold curl all that well (but not horrible). Up next is my experimentation with the waterproof version to possibly address the curl problem.

Benefit Stay Don’t Stray Eye Primer – I used to be an Urban Decay Primer Potion user and swore I wouldn’t use anything else. Then my Primer Potion separated on me and I wanted to use up some of my sample primers. I’m so happy I did! I don’t have oily lids (or really oily anything….) and don’t use primer every day but do when I’m going to be out all day or going out at night. I love that this primer is skin tone coloured as it cancels out any redness or blue tones after little sleep. A little bit goes a long way and prevents creasing and fading. They say this can be used as a concealer primer as well…haven’t tried that out yet.

NYX Mega Shine Lip Gloss in Beige – A creamy, pigmented, non-sticky lip gloss that has a sweet smell. Such a beautiful colour (that is not beige at all) that is great to use during the day and good for any skin tone.

Revlon Lipstick in Primrose – I should really resolve to buy more Revlon lipsticks (give me colour suggestions in the comments) because I love this one too much! Before fall and winter, I would wear this almost every other day. A great nude-pink colour that is good for daytime or nighttime wear. Looks great with a pale pink or a nude lip gloss over top. Lasts a decent amount of time and doesn’t dry out my lips.

Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Dark Circles Eraser – Can you tell I like this product?? A creamy, decently pigmented concealer for under the eyes. I’ve noticed that my dark circles are getting worse and worse over time so I just keep using this product in combo with the Bobbi Brown Corrector to hide them. On days that I don’t have time for multi-step concealing this product on its own does a great job too! Next up is trying the Brightening shade of it – to trick people into thinking I always get a good night’s sleep…

Stila Stay All Day Liquid Eye Liner – So I got this in December but it still made my 2013 favourites – that is saying something. I usually hate doing a winged eye liner look, until I used this. The product goes on super easily, super pigmented and precisely! Once this dries, it does not move until you want it to. A great thin felt tip that is flexible enough to create a tiny or bold wing.

Rimmel Apocalips Lip Lacquer – Another product that people were raving about! A creamy, long lasting, uber pigmented lipstick/lip gloss combo. Glides on easily, doesn’t dry out the lips and lasts a really long time. The scent is a little off for them but I deal with it – the performance of this product is just way too good.

Rimmel Scandaleyes Eye Liner in Nude – In line with the use of the Maybelline concealer, I use this creamy, nude coloured eye liner to line my waterline to fake a good night’s sleep. Much better than using a white eye liner as it looks much more natural. This eye liner also lasts a long time for me (nothing stays in my waterline for too long).

Joe Fresh Cream Blush in Apricot – During the spring and summer, this was one of my go-to blushes. I don’t know why I never used cream blushes before this one….and can’t wait to buy some more soon! A creamy, blendable, beautiful neutral coloured blush. Can be applied using your fingers or a brush (love the Real Techniques Contour one for this).

Benefit Watt’s Up Highlighter – A cream, gold toned highlighter that I love to use in the inner corners of my eyes and also to brighten up the bags under my eyes. Also great on the cheekbones, cupid’s bow and below the brow. A little bit goes a long way and can be directly applied to the skin but I tend to use a concealer brush to apply it for precise control.

Maybelline Color Tattoo in Bad to the Bronze – When I was in a rush and needed to get ready quickly, I always reached for a Color Tattoo. Mainly in this colour or in Barely Branded. A non-creasing cream eyeshadow that is super pigmented and can be used as a primer for eye looks.

Sephora/Maybelline Brow Pencils – I loved both of these so much and brows are so important to me that yes, I have 2 brow pencils in my favourites. In the past couple of months, I used the Maybelline one more but the Sephora one was quite loved before that. Both are great, thin pencils that give precise lines for your brows. The Sephora one is a bit dryer than the Maybelline one, but not that big of a difference. I like the comb on the Sephora one more but the Maybelline one is cheaper. Both of these are significantly cheaper than the cult favourite Anastasia Brow Wiz (hooray!).

til next time…
