Beauty Favourites of 2014

Another year has come and gone. During this year, I fell in love with makeup and all things beauty even more. Some products didn’t quite work out for me while others really stood out from the rest.

Here are my favourite beauty products of 2014. Make sure to link your favourites posts in the comments or let me know what you loved last year.

Foundation: Lancome Teint Miracle – I am always on the hunt for the perfect foundation for my dry skin that doesn’t break me out. I definitely found an amazing one this year (still not quite perfect though). The Teint Miracle is great for dry skin as it makes your skin look like it’s glowing but not greasy. A medium coverage foundation that you can build up a bit in areas that need it. I don’t find that it oxidizes and it stays flawless for a good 8 hours.

Concealer: Maybelline Age Rewind Dark Circles Eraser – A staple in my face makeup routine. A nice and thin concealer that still covers up your dark circles. I really want to try out the brightening shade to see if it helps with that. It made my 2013 Favourites as well so you know it’s a keeper! I should also give an honourary mention to the No Dark Shadows concealer as I used that for a good 5 months this year.

Powder: L’Oreal True Match Super Blendable Powder – Even though I have dry skin I still like to set my foundation with a powder to make sure it lasts all day. I’m so impressed by this powder from L’Oreal because it is finely milled and never makes your face look cakey.

Bronzer: Sephora Bronzer in Los Cabos – The most perfect bronzer for fair skin. Doesn’t look muddy or too orange. Blends like a dream and you don’t need a lot as it is decently pigmented. Added bonus that it is matte so it’s perfect for contouring.

Blush: Bobbi Brown in Coral Sugar – The perfect pink-coral shade with a touch of shimmer. A wonderful blush for the spring and summer but can also help warm up your face during the cooler months. These blushes have great pigmentation but are also very blendable.

Highlight: Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder Palette – One of the best purchases I’ve made all year. The middle shade is amazing as a highlight but the other two are great for enhancing your contour and blush. I use this palette all the time to finish all of my makeup looks, especially when I go out or am getting my pictures taken.

Brow Products: Maybelline Define-a-brow Pencil and Anastasia Clear Brow Gel – My go-to brow pencil to fill in my brows. The perfect shade of brown for me – not too red. I don’t like the brush on it but I just use a spoolie instead. BUT I saw a discontinued sticker on this at Rexall the other day……and if that is true I’m going to be one sad beauty lover. I’ll just have to finally test out the Anastasia Brow Wiz.  The only brow gel I will use is the Anastasia one. Controls my brows and blends out my pencil to make my brows look a bit more natural. Doesn’t flake or make my brows crunchy.

Eye Primer: Benefit Stay Don’t Stray – The only primer I depend on to keep my eyeshadow looking great all day and crease-free. The light shade is the perfect colour for me and helps correct any discolouration on my eyelids. You only need a tiny bit so these little samples last for ages! Another product that has been part of my Favourites for two years now.

Eyeshadow: BareMinerals Eyeshadow Duo in Top Shelf and Mac Omega – When I need a quick eye look I immediately go for these shadows (or Urban Decay Sin). I put the bronze colour over the outer two-thirds of my eye and the lighter colour on the inner third. Then I blend it out with Omega throughout the crease and on my lower lash line. Voilà!

Eyeliner: Kat Von D Tattoo Liner in Trooper – I always said that I would consistently use the Stila liquid liner but I wanted to see what the hype was all about with this Kat Von D one. It is amazing. I really like the brush tip instead of a felt tip one as I can get a more precise line. It lasts all day and night without wearing at all. Added bonus is that it is a couple dollars cheaper than the Stila one.

Mascara: Maybelline Big Eyes Waterproof Mascara – I can’t say I have an absolute favourite mascara (that’s the goal of 2015 – find one!) but I do really enjoy this one from Maybelline. The lower lash mascara is great for that or for being a primer for your top lashes. The upper lash mascara adds lots of volume and keeps my lashes curled all day without flaking or smudging.

Lip Exfoliator: elf Lip Exfoliator – The most convenient way to exfoliate your lips and it is super effective. Perfect prep before sporting bright lip colours.

Lipsticks: YSL Rouge Volupté Shine in #8 (1st swatch) and NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in Prague (2nd swatch) – Whenever I need a neutral pink lip or to feel fancy, I bust out my YSL lipstick. I love the way this feels on the lips and the my lips but better shade. When I need a bold lip that will last forever I turn to this matte lip cream. Such a gorgeous deep berry shade that you can make deeper in colour by layering it.

Lipglosses: Chanel Rouge Allure Gloss in Audace (3rd swatch), Marc Jacobs Lust for Lacquer in Kissability (5th swatch) and Buxom Lipglosses (4th swatch) – The Chanel gloss was another splurge of 2014 but oh man is it so worth it. A non-sticky, nicely pigmented gloss that is super shiny. I also love the very unique colour of this gloss and the packaging makes me feel super fancy and like a spy. The Marc Jacobs gloss is a great everyday shade and again isn’t sticky plus it smells oh so nice. Finally, I’ve been very impressed with the Buxom glosses. They are bit more sticky, which I’m not against even though it might seem like it, but I love how glossy they are. They make your lips appear fuller with the shine and also plump them a bit with tingling mint.

Nail Polishes: Chanel Coup de Coeur and OPI My Very First Knockwurst – I picked up the Chanel polish during my trip to Atlanta and I love this berry colour. Great for all seasons! When I need a neutral nail though I head straight for this OPI polish. A great blush-taupe that I constantly wear at conferences.

And that’s it! I can’t wait to see what 2015 brings to the world of beauty!

til next time…
