They’re here! They’re here! Last week ColourPop released their highly anticipated Ultra Matte Lips which are a super pigmented, matte liquid lipstick. They retail for $6 USD and come in 25 shades (apparently even more are on the way). Now they do ship from the US so shipping can be a little expensive to Canada but with the exchange rate and shipping minus a $5 discount it came out to just under $10 CDN each.
I scoured YouTube for videos of swatches before they launched so that I would know exactly which shades I wanted. Some shades are very out there but I tried my best to stick with ones that I would actually reach for. As of right now they are sold out, but are not limited edition so they will be restocked. Make sure to check out some swatch videos to see what the other 17 shades look like!
The ColourPop Cosmetics Ultra Matte Lips come in really nice clear tube packaging with silver handle and holographic logo. The applicator is a doe-foot wand that is pretty stiff, which makes for much easier application. A fair amount of product comes on the wand so I found it was best to scrap it off gently and use just what was left on the wand. If I needed a bit more during application, I would go and pick up the excess I brushed off. I think this is the best way to remedy the issue that some people have had of excess product oozing out as you tighten the wand while closing it.
Now in terms of application, they smoothed on quite evenly and dried within about a minute of application. The key is to apply only a thin, even layer as a thicker one may start cracking once dry. After they are set, they feel pretty comfortable on the lips as long as you really hydrate your lips before applying. Like I’m talking vaseline or a thick lip balm. Make sure to also exfoliate your lips before applying because these will emphasize any dry bits.
Okay! Time for the swatches! The above photo shows all 8 together.
Midi – A soft neutral beige with a hint of pink to make it wearable. It’s really hard for me to find a straight nude but this looks really nice! Applied really easily, not patchy and didn’t stain the lips.
Trap – A greige (gray-beige) with a hint of mauve to make it wearable. I love this colour so much. A perfect colour for the summer to channel that 90’s grunge trend. Really excited to wear it with a purple smokey eye. Applied very well, not patchy and didn’t stain the lips.
Solow – A neutral nude pink with a dusty rose tinge. The most everyday colour out of the bunch. I found that this was the thinnest formula of the bunch, it applied nicely but differently than the other nudes. This one was most at risk for me of oozing out while closing the tube. Minimal staining of the lips.
Drive-In – A midtone bright magenta that leans a bit more purple on me. A different take on a hot pink lip. Such a pretty summer colour! Applied relatively well, a touch patchy and did stain the lips a little bit.
Lychee – A bright warm violet that dries down a bit darker. This is a true purple lip which I’ve been looking for for ages. It applied patchy on me and I tried to correct it but it didn’t help. Will definitely have to take my time with it next time around. This felt the heaviest on the lips, maybe because of the second coat to try and even it out. It did stain the lips and was a pretty big pain to take off.
Tulle – A dusty mauve burgundy with a hint of brown. Another super unique colour from the range. Will be such a great fall and winter colour. This applied as well as Drive-In did but the patchiness is more noticeable because of the darker colour. Stained the lips slightly.
Creeper – A true classic blue red. Perfection! This is definitely my favourite of the bold colours! Applied like a dream, no patchiness and felt comfortable on the lips. It does stain the lips a bit.
LAX – A blackened red that dries super dark. This was the riskiest one that I chose but I’m pretty happy with the colour. I can’t wait to wear this in fall and winter. However, this one was the hardest to apply. Patchy, easy to screw up the perfect lines on the outside, and was an absolute pain to remove. I just need some more practice with it I think.
Now I wanted to show what Midi and Trap and Drive-In and Lychee look side by side as they are pretty similar to each other. Trap and Midi do differ enough with Trap (on bottom) really giving off that mauve vibe. While Drive-In and Lychee almost looking like it’s one vs. two coats. But the makeup obsessed part of me say they are different enough!
Overall, I’m pretty impressed with these lip products. I do find that the lighter shades are easier to apply and feel better on the lips. I removed my swatches with a waterproof eye makeup remover and that certainly did the trick.
