Summer is my absolute favourite season – my birthday happens, no need for a silly coat or boots and my skin absolutely loves the humidity. Now I’m not one to be affected by the heat but my makeup can be. I wanted to share my go-to summer makeup routine to ensure I look as fresh faced as possible all day long.
Minimal makeup with a pop of colour works best for me. No worries about eyeliner running down my face or that perfectly blended eye look to crease beyond belief.
I first start with a good base of makeup – if I’m going to be in extreme heat conditions I’ll make sure to apply a good long lasting primer before foundation (I’ve been loving the Make Up For Ever Smoothing First Step). Now I have dry skin so using a super matte foundation is just out of the question, even on a humid day. Instead, I make sure to apply it in very thin coats so that it doesn’t cake up and have found that if I use a damp Beauty Blender my foundation lasts hours longer than if applied with a brush (I’m wearing YSL Le Teint Touche Eclat in this post). I spot concealer any areas that need it and also conceal under my eyes with a long lasting, non-creasing concealer (MAC Pro Longwear Concealer). To set my base, I will use a mattifying powder, Essence All About Matt!, with my damp beauty blender to make sure there is no build up.
For my eyes, I keep it very simple with a light shimmery shade all over the lid (the lightest shade in the Essence 3D Eyeshadow in #3 Irresistable Choco Cupcake) then add a bit of depth with a taupe or brown shade within the crease and lightly along the upper and lower lashlines (the top shade in the Essence Smokey Eye Set in #2 Smokey Day). To brighten up my inner corner and browbone, I lightly dusted some of the limited edition Becca Highlighter in Champagne Pop. Fill in my brows with the Dior Brow Styler and coat my lashes with waterproof mascara (I used the Maybelline Pumped Up Colossal mascara).
For the cheeks, I want to add warmth and colour but don’t feel like layering a million products. The Essence Sun Club All-in-One Bronzing Highlighter for Lighter Skin gives a subtle glow plus a rosy tint to the cheeks and is super pigmented! I applied it with a kabuki brush to give that diffused flush look. Subtle highlight just isn’t my speed right now so I added more of the Becca highlight to the tops of my cheekbones as well as long the bridge of my nose and my cupid’s bow.
Lastly, for lips, as the eyes are super simple, a pop of colour was needed. The Essence Long Lasting Lipstick in #12 Blush My Lips and the Essence XXXL Shine Lipgloss in #17 Fabulous Fuchsia paired super well together, feel great on the lips and last for 1-2 hours before needing a touch up.
Make sure to set the entire look with a setting spray that addresses your skin concerns – Urban Decay All Nighter is a good all around spray but I love my NYX Dewy Setting Spray as it helps my makeup last longer and gives my skin a healthy glow without looking greasy. Also, pack some blotting papers in your purse for the day to rid your face of any sweat or oils so that you don’t need to keep layering on the powder.
What do you do to keep your makeup looking fresh all day during the summer? Let me know in the comments as I’m sure I can pick up a trick or two from you too!
til next time…
