Matte lipsticks have taken the beauty world by storm. Recently, the major drugstore brands have jumped on the bandwagon as well. Maybelline and L’Oreal have both released a liquid matte lipstick in the past month or so. But how do these two drugstore matte lip products compare?
I picked up a shade from both the Maybelline Vivid Matte Liquid collection and the L’Oreal Infallible Pro-Matte Gloss collection. I’ve worn both for one day this week at work so I could see how it wears during the day. I love one and found the other one failed me, big time. Which one is which? Keep reading!
Maybelline Vivid Matte Liquid in Berry Boost
These come in 10 different shades and retail for $12.99. They promise bold, vibrant colour that is hydrating with a velvet matte finish. I picked up Berry Boost which actually looks a lot deeper in the tube than in these pictures. But from the swatches you can see that it is a very bright berry shade that leans very pink.
The applicator is a long, straight doe foot type which does make it very easy to apply the product precisely. The formulation of these feels very gel-like rather than velvet and is nicely pigmented. However, when applied very thinly it does become hard to achieve an even application. But if you layer it on a little thicker you don’t achieve that matte finish. Even after hours of wear, the glossy finish didn’t go away.
Now I wore this throughout the day at work where I was talking, eating, drinking, etc. I really gave it a good test of how long it lasted. First off, I did a blot test where I lightly pressed my lips onto a tissue and I would say 1/4 of the product came off (and this was after letting the product set for at least 10 minutes). It transferred off very easily when drinking out of a mug or can as well. The wear isn’t even either as it intensely stains the edges of your lips but not the rest. This stain is a bright fuchsia colour as well. Definitely not subtle.
In addition to the uneven wear, it also bled outside of my lip line. Now I didn’t wear a lip liner for the purpose of testing the lip product, but I highly recommend using one. I needed to reapply every 2 hours or so and felt like I continuously had to check my lips in the mirror.
Finally, I really didn’t enjoy the taste/smell of the product. It almost had a plastic taste, similar to the Color Elixirs.
Overall, while I enjoy the colour selection of the Maybelline Vivid Matte Liquids, the one I tried just didn’t work out for me.
L’Oreal Infallible Pro-Matte Gloss in Nude Allure
These come in 10 shades as well and retail for $13.99-14.99. The shade range for the L’Oreal ones is much more neutral and conservative than the violet and dark plum ones in the Maybelline range. They promise bold, velvet finish lip colours (sound familiar?). I picked up Nude Allure which is a gorgeous terracotta nude shade.
The applicator is a large, triangular doe foot applicator which makes it very easy to apply colour quickly but precisely. The hole in the middle makes sure that enough product is on the wand for application. In comparison to the more gel-like formula of the Maybelline product, the L’Oreal one is much more velvet/mousse-like. It reminds me of the NYX Soft Matte Lip Creams, a lot. With one swipe, you achieve perfect pigmentation that is actually matte.
During my workday test, this definitely lasted longer while drinking and eating. When it did wear off, it did so much more evenly but still had more staining around the edges of the lips. No bleeding outside the lips happened either so I didn’t feel like I had to keep checking my lips. My lips felt comfortable for the entire day and I needed to reapply every 3 hours or so.
Lastly, the scent/taste was much more pleasant and subtle, and not like the scent of the regular L’Oreal lipsticks.
Overall, I think you can tell that I had a lot more success with the L’Oreal Infallible Pro-Matte Gloss than the Maybelline Vivid Matte Liquid. Now I’m not saying don’t pick up one of the Maybelline ones but maybe try one of the more neutral shades. I would highly recommend the L’Oreal Pro-Matte Glosses though!
Have you tried either of these products? What were your thoughts?
